Weekend Escape: Belum Caves And Gandikota

Rarely does it happen that you plan a trip on Friday afternoon and all ends up this perfect. This was one such.

I came to learn about this place some 3 years ago while reading a travelogue on Team-BHP. And since then, I must have planned (and later dropped) this trip with if not half a dozen sets of friends, but couldn’t make it, any time.
Last few weeks have being dull in office. I badly needed a break. This Friday, while walking to my desk, lethargy hit me so hard that I have to escape out, be it anywhere, but I have to. Came to my desk, few clicks and my plan was set. Yet another solo trip J

And so by Sunday morning at 6:30, I found myself standing in a remote railway station, Tadipatri. The train was running late by an hour, but good for me. The town was awake and buzzing by then. I was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by such clean and well-kept railway station. I might be the only person to alight and was happily checked by the Station Master for the ticket. It was a cloudy day and there was mild breeze running across the fields and I knew, I’m going to have a good day today. Next stop was Tadipatri Bus Depot, some 4 KM from the station. You can opt for shared autos but I preferred my morning walk (another advantage of solo trips, one head to order and four limbs to obey). The town was going around doing its daily chores as I crossed it’s by lanes. The fragrance of morning freshness aptly mixed with the aroma coming out of temples made it a perfect walk, those occasional “who’s this stranger” look by the local made it even more appreciable.

I took morning 8 AM Bus from Tadiparti to Banganapalle. The bus was too good as per my experiences with state transport buses and started bang on time. And roads, I must have to make a special mentions about the road. A big applause goes out for State of Andhra Pradesh for maintaining such an up standards. Given this place was hit with heavy rains recently, the roads have no mark of it. And it stands good, not only just for state highways, but even for bypasses or even a remote village in roads too. I’m sure other states can surely have a lesson or two from Andhra Pradesh at least on roads.

45 minutes of smooth ride amongst paddy fields and a cement factory, I was standing on the entry gate of Belum Caves. You would know that your destination is approaching from a distance itself. A giant Lord Buddha’s statue is visible good from a good distance before. Belum Caves is the largest and longest cave system open to the public on the Indian subcontinent, the second largest natural caves on the Indian Subcontinent. They have long passages, galleries, spacious caverns with fresh water and siphons. This natural underground cave system was formed over the course of tens of thousands of years by the constant flow of underground water. The cave system reaches its deepest point of 46 m from entrance level.

The site is maintained by APTDC and gates open by 1000 Hrs. I was about an hour before time which I chose to spend roaming around in nearby onions farms, interacting with locals. By 10, there were good number of families out on a road trips, bikers, students on school trips jamming the place. Down in caves, you are ought to have a deep breathe appreciating nature and its hidden gems of beauty. There are few passages so narrow that you literally have to squeeze you out of them. Once on other side, the mere thought of realizing that hundreds of year from now, some monk, used to do this, almost every day, in pitch darkness, to find peace enough to meditate and connect to his god, fills you with some kind of contentedness and completeness.

Human brain have always been hard-wired with god. It had and continues to make him do unthinkable. Two hours well spent and this thought, saw me exiting the caves. A special mention to APTDC officials on the site, who tried to guide me, in all possible way, given our linguistic difference, for the way forward.

Next stop was Kolimigundla, a nearby village. The moment I reached the bus stand, a bus moved in for my next destination, Jammalamadugu (tongue-twister isn’t it, I too found it too). Now imagine me asking locals for if the bus goes to Jam-mala-mad-ugu  :D, they thankfully corrected me. It is spelled as Ja-mmal-madu-gu. Bus was crowded but breathable and well-kept. Looking out, country side was all but lush green paddy fields with occasional cement plants and inside the bus, a few dozen of pupils staring at me. I preferred keep looking outside. Two hours later I was standing in Jammalamadugu and my next stop was Gandikota Fort. It stands on the edge Grand Canyon-like gorge over Pennar River and about 12 KM from Jammalamadugu. Public transport are there but their frequency are very rare. You can opt for a private auto or simply walk, like me. J

Windmill by the skyline added by the blue of the reservoir down under, the cloudy afternoon and cool mildly strong breeze coming from the river made everything perfect for a walk, humming your favorite songs, least worrying about the world you come from, problems awaiting you there. You hardly see anyone passing by, heavenly, if you love solitude. Thanks to all this trek was much faster and less tiring.

And what it resulted in, was this

It was a bit difficult to climb through rocks to reach till the edge of the rock wall to get a good look at our own grand canyon. The wind was strong on the top, it was helluva scary to hold on to that edge and look down, but it was worth it. The view was something to behold. It was nothing man made, all natural and it existed in the neighbourhood. After the initial excitement sank in, all I did was to just sit on a rock by the edge and just be mesmerised by the scene. There were no thoughts, no deadlines and no to-dos. It was complete blank. It was just me and this moment. After all this was exactly I came looking for, all the way J

I cannot recall how long I just kept sitting hanging my legs into that some 500ft deep gorge. All I know was that by the time I turned back, I was only last few left there and Sun was to set down soon. A gang of college students happily offered me a lift back till Jammalamadugu. And there on, again a two hour long bus ride to Tadiparti. The town had already calling it a day by the time I reached. By 8 PM, I was sitting on the steps of the foot over bridge of the railway station, enjoying the cool evening breeze. Not any later, the train pulled into the platform to take me to the world I came from. It was day well spent, one, which I will cherish for long. May many more such come J

Pawankhind :Water Soaked Trip

Well, I have been keeping the tradition and going to places for last couple of weekends. In the same series, me and a few of office friends went to Pavankhind Resorts to enjoy and relax.

Now before I dive into the details of my trip here are a few facts. ‘Khind’ means a valley in Marathi. This valley has a historical significance, as Shivaji Maharaj escaped through this valley only after his 300 brave Maratha soldiers led by sardar Baji Prabhu Deshpande laid down their lives so that Shivaji could get time to escape. As per the local folk lore, Despande fought so hard that his limbs continued to fight even after his head was severed from his body!! A bravery and commitment so hard to find in today’s times.

I began our journey early in the morning. The time when the night is at its darkest and the moon glow the brightest. But since we are professional, can’t afford of not being late. By the time we left Pune, sky was good soaked in a vivid array of yellow.

Once fed and watered our bus trudged on. Here I’d like to congratulate the excellent driving skills of Balaji. Full marks to him for his skills which I can only dream to emulate.

After a four and a half hour ride in our green chariots we reached our resort which was to be our abode for the next 2 days and a night. The place where Rohan would refine his star rating policy and award us stars for any work done for him!

Now something about the resort: This resort (Pavankhind resort) has all the amenities you can dream of in such a place. They have everything right upto a swimming pool, library and a table tennis table (jungle mein mangal). To add to it, they give you such personalized attention and service that you really miss them when you leave the place. Plus, the food there is simply awesome and instructions at each step detailed and to the point with a touch of humour. Also, one very important point to note is, this resort is perennially under the curtain of a drizzle which makes cool pleasant weather and mind blowing greenery omnipresent. A full evening swimming made it for the travel.

On this picture perfect location we had a sumptuous breakfast with a pre-recorded announcement chalking out our iternary for the day. The first was a sightseeing trip on the roof top of a jeep. The ride on the roof was again an amazing experience. Through dense forest and fog our jeep went on. Stopping at amazing sites where the pre-recorded announcement gave some brief info on the location. Each turn was more beautiful than the last and each tree greener than the previous one. All the while, a slight drizzle and cool wind was a continuous companion.

We even trekked downhill for a good 30-45 mins to enjoy the beauty on foot. Finally, after some more adventurous trekking we reached the base of a water fall. Boy! We had the time of our lives there. It was like the world’s largest shower with no end to water. And to add to the sense of adventure, there were leeches around to give us company. One managed to drink a lot of blood off me. But it was fun, the waterfall I mean. (Sadly no pics of the place as we were too busy enjoying than risking our cams there). When we were done bathing and felt cleaner than we ever had, up we trekked back to a waiting cup of hot tea and coffee. Even the rain Gods blessed us and halted the near incessant rain for a few minutes.

The journey up was made more adventurous courtesy to some of my wild fantasy which wish I could post and for the down, rains had its share of wildness. It started raining hippos and rhinos and I being in front had it all. It was a good lesson how a silent stream turns ghastly in just a 20 min rains here uphills.

With all the trekking and bathing we were hungry as hell despite our heavy breakfasts. Off we were shepherded on top of the jeep to a waiting hot lunch. It was a meal fit for a king. I’ll just jot down a few items if not all... Roasted chicken, boiled corn, roasted potatoes, brinjal, capsicum & onions (a local delicacy), gulabjamuns, raita, dal, roti, vegetables, etc. etc… And to cap it all there was a bonfire lit where we could sit and dry ourselves!!

Once we were all dried and rested the jeep was ready to take us back to our resort where we would spend the night. But well, all is well that ends well. We reached back safe and sound, had a hot bath and spent the evening chatting and relaxing. Ah... Life….

And with a content smile and tired but happy legs we dozed off. That was how Day 1 went at Pavankhind Resorts. Well actually not, all the pokers in my room didn’t let me sleep till 2 am.

Day 2 dawned on a lazy note. Had a late breakfast which comprised of hot poha, curd and misal. An ideal meal for the cool morning on the mountain. I’ll keep this short as we didn’t do much this day but see some fabulous sites. Here pictures speak more than words... :)

Konkan Railways : Journey to Heaven

It’s monsoon time in India and I have a promises to keep.
Keeping up with my annual date with Konkan Railways for the third consecutive year, this year also I made the all famous Panvel-Madgaon Trip with Konkan Railways.

It all started on Friday night(and yes, only after having two boring meetings and a last minute checkin’s), I board a train to Kalyan . This route is far more than familiar to me to excite me but that can never take away the scenic beauty on this route. How I can forget the Arab couple who have flown down to Mumbai for a one day only to have a MUMBAI-PUNE-MUMBAI trip by train and experience the virgin beauty of SHAYADRI Range(I met them way back in 2007).

Anyhow I made it to Panvel  by 5:00 am, had a light breakfast and aboard the Janshatabdi Express to Madgaon. The moment train left the concrete jungle of Mumbai suburbs in peeped the natural, pure and untouched beauty to the Konkan, it felt like you have moved into heaven. Firstly I had plans to put all my experience into word but latter did I realized that my vocabulary is far too poor to pen down this enormously fulfilling, exceptionally thrilling and deeply pacifying trip.

So I decided to take shelter of the Photos I have taken(all on them are taken from train only). ENJOY!!!!

I alighted the train at Thivim around and took a 3:00pm and took a heavy Konkani lunch(you can avail wide variety of veg. also in Konkan). My back train was at about 5:30 pm in the evening and it was bang on time. Not to miss here is that Konkan railways is a engineering miracle(I think I might need another blog space to discuss it).

The best part of this trip and for the first time in all my trip came soon after before the train was approaching SawantWadi. It was just a picture perfect scene to see the sun calling it a day behind the rain soaked green coated mountain ranges. As the day fell to its end, the scene grew far more heartthrob and  dearer to share them all on this blog J .

Finally, the trip ended on Sunday afternoon with another promise made to be back next year.

Benaras: Journey Back into Ages

It is 4:45 AM in a chilling January morning, before you can wish to remain in your bed for some more time, the Azan from a near mosque and ShivStuti from the next temple will remindiing you that you are in the holy city of Varanasi(originally Benaras). I jumped down on the station and the breeze from river Ganga welcomed me,I was feeling like a small kid out into a playground.

I was there with a very tight schedule but then time is a thing which you have to scoop out.

The first day was hectic like hell, from morning 5:30 am till 9:00 pm. All I remember is my bed.

Day two was little free and we know where to head to.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple and 84 Ghats
The temple is dedicated to the prime deity of Vanarasi – Vishwanath, an identity of Lord Shiva. It is also known as the Golden Temple for its 15.5 metre high spire coated with one ton of gold plating and which is standing gracefully in Varanasi. The temple was destroyed during various invasions and was rebuilt by Rani Ahilyabai of Indore in 1776. You can even offer 'puja' in the temple and there are holy saints in the temple premises to help you out. But it is always advisable to go for some authorized persons which your guide will help you to find out.At the temple gate you will have to go through a security checking and you are requested to co-operate with the guards. You will have to leave your mobile phone there. Any kind of baggage or food item is not admissible inside the temple premises and hence you are requested to leave them in your hotel or bus.

Next we headed to the Ghats. There are some 84 ghats in a line. You will find all kind of people there, Babas, Sadhus, Aghori Babas, Naga, Foreigners and many more with even more priorities. It was 5:30pm and thing were tuning up for the world famous “Ganga Aarti”. Wish we could had waited to witness this heavenly affair but then time didn’t allowed us.

Day three was almost free, and we dicided to hit Sarnath.
Sarnath
Come Sarnath and you will find yourself placed somewhere in Tibet or Korea. Sarnath situated at a distance of 8 km from Varanasi is one of the most important sites of Buddhist circuits
. It still holds the reminiscence of Lord Buddha which is savored by thousands of tourists every year coming from different parts of the world. As you take a walk in the ancient roads and lanes, you may have a spine chilling experience with the feeling that Lord might had walked on the same road some thousand years back. The Sarnath complex houses the remains of a Buddhist monastic settlement which are till now alive with the fragrance Buddhist divinity. Dharma Chakra Stupa is a must see place in Sarnath where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon after attaining salvation. Though we were roaming there as stupid, the area was alive when the devotees fill the ambiance enchanting Sanskrit mantra.
Once you are in Sarnath, do not miss to visit the museum which contains some exquisite 6th or 11th century Buddhist icons excavated from the site, which may just leave you bedazzled. Don't miss to have the experience. It in-house the famous “Ashoka Chakra” and “Char Singh” emblem in the central porch. If you a human , you cannot avoid admiring the brilliance of the sculptures. Every cut identical, every Curve identical.

Last day in the city we were in no mood to miss the best part of the city.
Banaras Hindu University
The University is the largest residential university in Asia, with over 12,000 students living on its campus. Established at the beginning of this century, Benaras Hindu University is famous for having an excellent Sanskrit school. The Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum inside the university campus is one of the best museums in India and deserves a close look from your side. The big statue of Krishna holding Govardhana Hill, dating from the fourth century is no doubt the prime attraction of the museum.
For all those who believe that the best of Indian beauties lives in Delhi or Chandigarh, come BHU and you will repent. You have to be here to see how a girl can look so damm beautiful even in a Indian attire. Not a single face to avoid. That whole evening, we kept roaming in the campus admiring natural beauties(of both sense) and left the city with many fond memories of the city and its people.
